Sullivan’s Brewery was founded in Kilkenny in 1702 and operated from the James’s Street Maltings. The brewery became renowned for its Red Ale, brewed using locally sourced malt and hops. For more than 200 years, Sullivan’s was an integral part of the city’s culture, until 1918 when the brewery closed after a younger member of the family lost the business in a gambling bet.
In 2016, Sullivan’s was revived when the Smithwick and Sullivan families joined forces to bring the brewery back to life. This marked the return of craft brewing to Kilkenny, with a new brewery and visitor centre established in the city’s historic quarter.
